EL: Saidah, thanks for joining us, let’s jump right in! Tell us a little bit about We Are, your debut single. Did you write it? What was the inspiration behind it?

SN: Thanks so much for having me! I’m so excited to share with you about my debut single, We Are! We released it December 21st and it’s been getting such a great response. The song came about after listening to the African artist Fela Kuti with my husband. We were inspired by the horns and the energy of his music and wanted to make a song that affirmed who “We Are” as a people; we’re strong, we’re resilient, we’re survivors. There’s a lot of music out today that sounds good, has a good groove or beat but when you listen to the lyrics you realize this isn’t who we are. We need music that awakens us. no distractions, pure good vibes. I hope that’s what listeners feel when they haer We Are.”

EL: What made you venture out on your own?

SN: Well dancing is my passion, I love it but I felt I wasn’t really living up to my full potential without giving music a chance. I went to a performing arts high school so music and singing has always been a part of my life, I’m ready to just get out there and share it.

EL: Did traveling with greats like Usher and Beyonce prepare you for this solo endeavor?

SN: Absolutely! I learned so much about artistry from all of the singers I’ve been blessed to dance with. Working with Beyonce in particular taught me to pay attention to details. She is consumed with details; from the microphones to wardrobe, the singers, the crew, there’s so much that goes into being an artist. I’m glad I’ve had a chance to learn from some of the best.

EL: What can fans expect from you in 2017?

SN: My full EP will be out soon as well as the video for “We are.” Also I’ll be releasing my memoir which will share my journey as a dancer touring with the greats. It will also have advice and just really share my testimony. God saw me through it all and I hope to inspire people through my story.

EL: Oh yes, 2017 will keep you busy! Where can our readers keep abreast of everything you’ve got going on?
