There is something about Christmas albums that make them universal in appeal and timeless in nature. It’s no surprise that Christmas music is a multi million dollar industry all by itself. It’s the feel good singing that gets even the season scrooge into the Holiday spirit. As a matter of fact, it’s not even officially Christmas time until you hear the first notes of the Temptations iconic rendition of “Silent Night.”  We’ve assembled 16 of what we think are the top Christmas albums of all time.  From gangsta rap to gospel to R&B to pop, from classic crooners to soulful rockers, we’ve got you covered. Play a selection from any of these albums and your company Christmas party is bound to be a hit.

16. Various Artists: CHRISTMAS ON DEATH ROW

Released in 1996, Christmas on Death Row is a compilation CD released by the infamous Death Row Records. Holiday tunes from Danny Boy, Snoop, Tupac and Michele are featured on the album which sold 200,000 copies. It was made as a form of charity to the community.

All your favorite holiday jams are performed by the popular a cappella group Pentatonix in their 2nd Holiday album. It also features two new original songs, “Good to Be Bad” and “The Christmas Sing-Along.”

  EL 1414. Babyface: Christmas with BABYFACE

This album is definitely for the grown and sexy. The legendary soulful crooner shows why he’s been a hit making singer songwriter for more than 25 years. Expect nothing other than smooth grooves and soft covers of holiday classics from the one and only Babyface.

El 1313. Patti Labelle: This Christmas

This Christmas is the first holiday album released by the legendary Patti Patti. The album includes original compositions such as “Twas Love”, which LaBelle shot a video for, and “Nothing Could Be Better”, which was sung live by LaBelle during an appearance on the show, A Different World, where she played Kadeem Hardison’s mother. Of course there are the standard holiday favorites included on this project as well. Play this album while eating a warm Patti Pie and you’ve got a winning combo!

12. Kirk Franklin & The Family: CHRISTMAS

There is one song that comes to mind when you mention Kirk Franklin and Christmas… Tamela Mann’s chilling “Now Behold the Lamb.”  That song is reason enough to add this CD to your Holiday collection.

11. Rahsaan Patterson: The Ultimate Gift

Best known for his funky neo soul music, Rahsaan’s Holiday album doesn’t disappoint. Listen out for the complex melodies of “Peace and Joy” or the killer chord progressions on the title track for proof that this is definitely a must have in your Christmas Music collection.  And for a dose of contagious yuletide funk, look no further than “Holiday.” The talented singer songwriter even breathes fresh life into Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” and Stevie Wonder’s “What Christmas Means to Me.”

10.  Tony Bennett: The Classic Christmas Album

Do we really need to say much about this albums? Timeless tunes from the classic crooner. Best performance on the CD is the 90+ year old entertainer’s reading of “Baby Its Cold Outside.”

9. SWV: A Special Christmas

These Sisters With Voices live up to their name on this 1998 Masterpiece. The R&B trio puts their urban pop spin on Holiday Classics and even a few originals.

8. Various Artists: A Classic Motown Christmas

Christmas just isn’t Christmas unless you hear the versions of Holiday Classics from the Motown family. This record is the ULTIMATE soulful Christmas CD. A 10 disc compilation with throwback tunes like the Temptation’s “Silent Night” and the Jackson 5’s “Santa Clause is Coming to Town.” Also making several appearances on this record are The Supremes, Rick James, Stevie Wonder, Smokie Robinson & The Miracles, Martha Reeves and many more!

We don’t even have to sell you on this one. Kem is known for his grown and sexy music and he takes it there with his first Holiday project. Featuring appearances from Patti Labelle, Ledisi and Ronald Isley, What Christmas Means is a no brianer for the ultimate sexy Christmas.

6. Luther Vandross: This is Christmas

Among the gems on this project is “Every Year, Every Christmas.” “The Mistletoe Jam”  and the classic Christmas ballad, “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas.”…Aint no party like a Luther party…that’s a guarantee!

5. Whitney Houston & Friends: The Preacher’s Wife Soundtrack

Although this isn’t technically a Christmas album, the movie it represents was centered around Christmas time and features the Greatest Voice of ALL Time….Whitney Houston on most of the tracks. Every track on this album is a stand out! Features include Monica, Johnny Gill, Bobby Brown, Shirley Caesar, Cissy Houston and the Georgia Mass Choir.

4. Boyz II Men: Christmas

This 1993 release contains one of the biggest selling urban Christmas singles of all time; the Brian McKnight duet, “Let It Snow.” The Philly fellas make their way through several jams before the end of the CD which went double platinum (2 Million copies sold worldwide.)

3. CeeLo Green: CeeLo’s Magic Moment

Rapper turned Singer turned TV Host CeeLo takes listeners on a trip through Christmas magic on his first Christmas album. With a haunting rendition of “Mary Did You Know, and a funky cover of “That’s What Christmas Means to Me.” Friends Christina Aguilera, Rod Stewart and the Muppets. Yep..THOSE Muppets!

2. Ledisi: It’s CHRISTMAS

One of the few albums our office plays all year around. Ledisi has managed to create a fun holiday album that all ages will enjoy. Be sure to check out the infectious “Children Go Where I send Thee!”

1. Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas

What did you expect? Mariah Carey is the queen of Christmas. This was her debut Christmas CD and features the hits “All I Want for Christmas is You,” “Joy to the World” and “Miss You Most at Christmas Time.”
