5 Questions: JJ Hairston

By on April 2, 2014

For nearly 15  years now, JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise have dominated the gospel charts with Top Ten radio classics like “Awesome God”, “After This”, “Lord of All” and “Incredible God, Incredible Praise“.  The Stellar award nominated aggregation shows no signs of slowing down; with high profile appearances on Good Morning America and BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel. Members of YP even performed with Miss Piggy on a recent Lady Gaga network TV special.

As he prepares the finishing touches on their highly anticipated album, I See Victory, the charismatic Conneticut native checked in with EssentialLyfe.com to answer our infamous…

5 Questions…

1. We heard about your new radio gig! What can you tell us about it? Maaan I’m so excited! It’s called “Sunday Praise with J.J. Hairston” on Hartford, Connecticut’s Hot 93.7 FM (WZMX). This is the first time this station has had gospel music on their station. It’s known for Hip-Hop and R&B! So the fact that they’re entrusting me as the host and that they’re trying gospel music is huge! Many of the listeners don’t go to church so this program may be introducing many of them to the gospel for the first time and hopefully, eventually, to Christ.el jj hairston

2. Do you have creative control over what you will be playing?  Yes. That’s the great thing. They’ve said to me do your thing. So I’ll be starting off with the contemporary urban music from my peers and then we may ease them into some of the classic gospel from the greats. It’s 3 hours so we can do alot. We’ll be playing everybody Karen (Clark-Sheard), Vashawn, Donnie…I’m honored to be able to blaze a trail in this area.

3. What music are you listening to right now? hmmnn…Erica, Erica Campbell’s new album. This new guy Jonathan McReynolds. Love his voice and his writing. Of course the new one from Donnie (McClurkin), that guy is classic. And she’s not gospel but I love Jazmine Sullivan!

4. Are you interested in breaking into other entertainment/ministry avenues? You know, I don’t know. I am always open to doing other things, and even as of late there have been some offers or opportunities for stage plays. I am just getting started with the radio show so I definitely want to see that through before I take on anything else.

5. What’s next for YP? Well we have been busy on the road. We just taped the Allstate Gospel Superfest. We’re finishing up the new project which should be in stores in August. The new single is so hot man, its called “It Pushed Me” featuring this Zebulon Ellis out of Atlanta who was on Sunday Best.  Then you can also check me out, I was blessed to participate in a tribute to Richard Smallwood on BET’s Celebration of Gospel. I think that airs this Sunday. So we’re keeping busy!
